You are right, sadly, college has become disproportionately expensive, and no longer leads directly to commensurate jobs. But one thing the Thiel scholarships do convey is prestige and contacts equivalent to top-flight higher education. In prestige-driven fields, lack of that kind of credibility can be an unfortunately — but real — barrier.
