You understand only too well that the terrorists who want to destroy and the jack boots that want to put a foot on their necks can't be the only passionate ones. But it does feel, sometimes, like what Yeats was describing in 1919 after the Great War.

More of us need "to rise to the front lines" as many of the Kurds are. But they are feeling more urgency than we are, I think. Thanks for weighing in Nick.

What an elegant and rational wake-up call that we should heed. In the weariness of this event - in a string of tragic events that I am still processing, and will be forever - I feel paralyzed in thought and action. One of the most compelling posts I saw was simply a clip of the three police personnel killed in the Hebdo violence: one a black woman; another a white male; and one a Muslim male, of Arab descent: all were French citizens. All are citizens of this world - our world. Not the 'other' world, the one that will never 'reach' US soil. As the extremes - of wealth, class, social mobility - squeeze ever harder, funded and fueled by legalized rulings such as Citizens United, underwritten by the Koch brothers et al, these desperate acts of cowardice and ignorance, will present itself, sooner or later. And, you know, someone will benefit from the ruthlessness, the horror. It may only be those who trade in weapons but someone will benefit. Where does it end?

The Kurdish fighting, particularly the women, in Kobane and resisting ISIS are absolute heroes. While a not so grateful nation we shed American blood and billions in flees in the face of danger we are quick to reinvest in the Iraqi mess. I don't understand why we don't openly support the Kurds....a lone star in the middle east, a willing and successful combatant against extremist, and a people who are truly secular and equal in government.
